Lachrymae - return to frontpage

the exhibit

On December 8, 2001, the Lachrymae project opened to the public at the Shattuck Studios in Berkeley, California. The 10 works on exhibit were the result of hundreds of small paper tears cut by people from around the world. As part of the exhibition on the opening night, and on December 15, there was a musical performance of Max Baloian's musical score for Lachrymae. Max Baloian on accordion was accompanied by Daniel Baer on violin and Jason Ditzian on clarinet. Viewers experienced the music in a darkened room as the musicians performed behind back lit screens showing only their silhouettes. As with the paintings, the score, and the exhibit, the performance focused on the inseparable link that connects sorrow to joy.
